Description

The NAGCO N012-3024-010 Butadiene (C4H6) Polymer Detector Tube is designed for selective measurement of butadiene when used with a compatible photoionization detector (PID) equipped with a 9.8 eV lamp. The tube has a typical butadiene measurement range of 0.1–200 ppmv.

Unlike conventional colorimetric detector tubes used with a manual sampling pump, this polymer tube is used as part of a PID-based measurement method. Sampling time and volume vary with temperature, and NAGCO specifies that calibration should be performed at the same temperature as the measurement.

Temperature & Sampling Requirements

  • 5–18°C (41–64°F): 180 second measurement time / 1500 mL sample volume
  • 18–30°C (64–86°F): 75 second measurement time / 600 mL sample volume
  • 30–40°C (86–104°F): 50 second measurement time / 400 mL sample volume

Calibration: NAGCO specifies that calibration should be performed at the same temperature as the measurement.

Humidity Correction

  • Below 5% RH: Correction factor 1.0
  • 50% RH: Correction factor 1.5
  • 80% RH: Correction factor 1.6

When calibration is performed using a dry gas cylinder, NAGCO specifies multiplying the indicated reading by the applicable humidity correction factor to obtain the true value.

Cross-Sensitivity & Interferences

NAGCO documents cross-sensitivity testing with acrylonitrile, styrene, ethylbenzene, toluene, benzene, methane, methyl bromide, ammonia, propane, isobutane, isobutylene, n-hexane, cyclohexane, vinyl chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane, vinylidene chloride, trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene. Some compounds can produce an apparent butadiene response. Refer to the NAGCO datasheet for the individual test concentrations and responses.

NAGCO also notes that methane above 1% by volume can reduce PID response without affecting tube capacity, while butane and higher hydrocarbons can reduce tube capacity.

Instrument & Operating Information

This polymer detector tube uses a PID-based measurement method and specifies a 9.8 eV standard lamp. It should not be treated as a conventional manual-pump colorimetric detector tube. Follow NAGCO's operating procedure, temperature-dependent sampling requirements and calibration instructions when performing measurements.

Important: Temperature, humidity, interfering compounds and total VOC loading can affect measurement performance. Always follow the NAGCO datasheet and applicable operating instructions for the measurement being performed.
